Honors In-Course Contract

An Honors In-Course Contract allows an Honors student to earn Honors credit in a non-Honors course. The student and faculty member collaborate to develop a project or course of study (alternate or additional course activities and/or assignments) that will enhance, enrich, and amplify the student’s learning and engagement in the course.

Process

Before submitting an Honors In-Course Contract, students must meet with the faculty member teaching the course they wish to pursue an Honors In-Course Contract to discuss the project or course of study specifics. This meeting should occur during the first week of the spring and fall semester, or the first couple days of the summer semester, though students may wish to initiate contact sooner.

After students have met with the faculty member and discussed and developed the specifics of their Honors In-Course Contract, students must submit an Honors In-Course Contract proposal for approval by the faculty member, department chair, and the Honors Program. Students can submit their proposal at go.niu.edu/honorsicc. If a proposal is denied, students are allowed one resubmission if their original submission was received by the deadline.

Proposal

For their Honors In-Course Contract proposal, students will answer a few questions pertaining to the details and scope of their project or course of study, its requirements, the grading criteria, and specific learning outcomes. Full information and details, including submission deadlines, can be found at the Honors In-Course Contract proposal link.
